Aercon Cup Report

Aercon Cup Handicap

Dear Club Members,

Last Friday evening saw the conclusion of this years Aercon cup handicap squash tournament with both the semi finals and finals in the main competition and the plate event being played. As always the evening was great fun and there was some cracking squash played by all.

Unfortunately semi finalist in the plate competition Matt Hartley went down with the lurgy the day before and wasn't well enough to take part which was a great shame and meant that his opponent Joe Purr got a bye to the final.(get well soon Matt). The other semi saw Jacob Mackenzie(with an A) take on another Hartley, Dad, Stuart where after a really close start with points even, Stuart pulled away winning 10 or 12 quick points and despite Jacob rallying it was too late and Stuart went on to claim his place in the final to play Joe. The plate final was also a tight affair with Joe pulling out an 8 point lead only to be caught again by Stuart who made it 19-19, it could have gone either way but it was eventually Joe who got to 25 points first to take the title in the plate competition.

The main event was equally exciting where in semi final one yet another Hartley, Sam took on the ever ready Bob Green. Bob played a really attacking game right from the off but it Sam's youth and great ability that was just too much for Bob and Sam won his way into the final. The other semi saw Tim Hayes take on the club number one Kyle Finch, this was going to be interesting, Kyle had to score 48 points to Tim's 5, surely he couldn't do it, could he??....yes he could, despite Tim playing some great squash which against many would have won any match, Kyle's fitness and shear class saw him score point after point nibbling away until eventually it was 23-23 and before Tim could blink, bang, bang it was all over and with Tim on his back Kyle strolled off...just another day at the office, now for the final.

In the final against Sam Hartley Kyle had even more to do needing to score 50 points to Sam's 5. Sam is young, fit and hungry and was desperate to topple the king but again Kyle relentlessly hammered away winning point after point, Sam was retrieving everything but just couldn't finish the points off. Kyle had racked up nearly 30 points before eventually Sam wore Kyle down and picked up 3 quick points and only needed 2 more for victory. Kyle could see his fourth Aercon cup title slipping away so put his serious head on and got it back to 24 all...a one rally shoot out unbelievably went to the incredible Kyle Finch, title number four for him but we haven't seen the end of the Hartley boys who will surely be lifting that title next year?

Two third place play offs saw Jacob Mackenzie win in the plate and Bob Green in the main competition.

Thank you to everyone who entered and took part. The next tournament will be the Squash club championships, an email for which will be sent out in a day or to with details of how to enter etc.

Regards

Mike Davies
