The Aercon Cup was held in the week Monday 12th to Friday 16th December 2011. It is a handicapped squash tournament. Each match was a single game to 25 points with American scoring used. Each player was allocated a handicap…and therefore has an equal chance of winning.
At the time of running the notice board had old records from the club’s 40th anniversary on show. These showed the 1973 tournament had 72 entrants! Last year the tournament was not held so there was uncertainty how popular it would be.

In all 27 members entered, allowing a good competition with two rounds before the quarter finals to be held. There were issues with members not being aware of match times or signing up to play but then not being available. Lessons were learnt around communication which has helped with the later competitions.

Perhaps the pick of the games in the early rounds was Jon Woolgar (+0) beating Rob Jarvis (-11) by just one point with the game neck and neck the whole way.

In the Quarter Final youth battled experience with 3 teenagers in the last 8. Natalie Morant (+0) pushed George Stanford (-18) hard, but was ultimately unsuccessful, losing (25-20). It was a similar story for Steve Hobley (+2) who was narrowly pipped by Dave Brierley (-25).

The semi final saw Kyle Finch (-20) never lose his points advantage over Dave Brierley to win 25-18 and meet Tim Luetchford (-15) in the final who had beaten George Stanford by a whisper, 25-23.

The final was contested in great spirit and ultimately won by Kyle 25-17. He was awarded his trophy in front of a packed bar for the first of the year’s quiz nights.
